Feeding scheme for the Elderly and People with Disabilities
Al-Waqf has embarked on a project to provide some basic assistance to the elderly and people with disabilities.
As a charity, Al-Waqf has limited resources. We attempt to provide assistance to the best of our ability. However, due to the limitation of resources, we have to confine our outreach to what we can reasonable manage.
This project envisages providing some very basic assistance to the elderly situated in the vicinity of our soup kitchen. In the recent unrest during July 2021, we had noticed that there were a number of elderly people who, with difficulty, had to make their way to the soup kitchen in order to see to basic needs. This prompted us to initiate a project whereby we intend providing some essentials to be delivered to the homes of our elderly.
Unfortunately, we have to confine this to a limited category of persons. Therefore, this offering is open to the following persons:
- Those who are 60 year old or above, and
- Either resides alone or as a couple. Thus those elderly persons who are residing with other family members will not qualify.
- Households with people having disabilities may also apply. We will assess the matter on a case to case basis and if reasonably possible, attempt to provide assistance.
Our intention is to provide something staple on a regular basis, which will be delivered to the door of the recipient. What we initially have in mind is to provide 1 loaf of bread and a litre of milk for every adult, three times a week. We also intend providing some basic soup/curry as well.
Due to our own limitations, this project will initially only be available to those residing in the following areas:
- Overport
- Asherville
- Morningside
- Springfield
- Sydenham
It is commonly experienced that elderly people are not so clued up with modern technology. However, this provides an ideal opportunity for the younger in our community to play an important role. If you are a person who does not qualify to receive benefits as mentioned above, you can nevertheless be a means for someone else benefitting. So for example if you have a neighbour, relative or acquaintance who you are aware of and who may qualify as above, you could be the means of linking that person to ourselves. By you gathering their necessary information and applying on their behalf, you would be playing an important role of assisting those in need.
Below is a link to a form. Those who require assistance under this project are requested to fill in the form. We will, Insha Allah (god willing) be in contact with you thereafter.
This project is open to all who qualify, irrespective of race, colour, creed or background.
We are not in a position to take over all the needs of the elderly. There are other organisations that cater specifically for this.
Therefore those who have been caring for the elderly should continue to do so, and should merely consider our efforts to be a small form of assistance, and not a replacement for their commendable work.
